9.7" iPad Shipments Numbered 48 million in 2011

In 2011, 9.7 inch Tablet PC shipments heavily increased since 9.7 inch iPad shipments reached 48 million, according to the Monthly TFT LCD  Shipment Database from NPD DisplaySearch. Although the panel manufacturers highly expected the shipments to reach 50 million units, it failed to hit the goal due to the inventory adjustment in Q4.

Most of 9.7 inch panel shipments were XGA (1024x768) and the brightness was above 400nits. In addition, they all adopted wide view angle technology like IPS or FFS. The main suppliers of the panel were Korea-based Samsung and LG Display and Taiwan-based Chi Mei Corporation. Each supplier had its own advantages in 2011 as the chart below showed.
NPD Display pointed out the growing trend of 9.7 inch panel shipments in 1H11 had significant relationship to the strong growth of Apple's iPad global sales. However, the shipments fluctuated in 2H11 monthly, especially the shipments decreased to 1 million in Nov. from historical record of 6 million in Sep. Both the supply chain management and production management met the challenge, particularly for the material inventory management and strict quality requirement. In 2011, LG Display, Samsung and Chi Mei supplied 9.7 inch panel by 54%, 40% and 6% respectively.

The 9.7 inch iPad shipments are expected to reach over 65 million in 2012 driven by the launch of new iPad mode, the lower cost of existing iPad and new panel  technologies for example, Glass Thinning technology and so on.
